Oliver von Dohnanyi

Slovak conductor Oliver von Dohnanyi (1955) studied at the Music Academy in Prague with Prof. Václav Neumann and Alois Klíma, and at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna with prof. Otmar Suitner.

In the years 1979 - 1986 he was conductor of the Radio Symphony Orchestra in Bratislava where he realised a great number of recordings not only for the Slovak Radio, but also for the Naxos, Marco Polo, Supraphon, Panton, Verga and Opus labels. In the years 1986 - 1991 he was principal conductor of the Slovak National Theatre Opera Orchestra in Bratislava, where enlarged the Opera's repertoire by scenic works by Borodin, Puccini, Bellini, Rossini, Smetana and Verdi. He performed with the Slovak National Theatre Opera ensemble in Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Hungary, Russia and China. His last production - Gounod's "Faust" was famous not only in former Czechoslovakia, but has been highly appreciated in Hungary, Israel and Great Britain, too. This production has been awarded the Prize of Critics in the category "music" in frame of the world-known festival in Edinburgh. At the same time, he worked with the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra in Bratislava. With this ensemble, he gave a number of concerts in Slovakia and was touring in Switzerland and Russia.He also realized some recordings with the Capella Istropolitana ensemble and conducted this chamber orchestra at their concerts in Slovakia, Italy, Germany, Austria and the Netherlands.

In the years 1993 - 1996 he has been the principal conductor of the Opera of the National Theatre in Prague. His production enriched the Theatre's repertoire by scenic works by Smetana, Gounod, Puccini, Verdi, Prokofiev, and Mozart. He was touring Japan in 1995 and 1997 with the extraordinary successful production of Mozart's Don Giovanni and La Nozze di Figaro. Since 1997 Oliver Dohnanyi regulary works with the English National Opera in London where he conducted with great success operas by Verdi (Falstaff) and Boito (Mefistofeles).
He is regular guest conductor in the following orchestras: Yomiuri - Nippon Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, Chicago Symfoniette, the National Symphony Orchestra of Portugal, Northern Philharmony Leeds, the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Kosice State Philharmonic Orchestra. Among orchestras abroad, he has been working with, we should mention also the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, the London Mozart Players, BBC Glasgow, BBC Belfast and the Irish National Symphony Orchestra.

Since 2000, Dohnanyi co-operates intensively with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra. He is a regular guest conductor of the Opera Leeds, where he realized productions of operas by Bizet, Ponchielli, Thomas, Smetana (the "Best Production" of 1998). Further he has been invited to Opera houses in Brazil, Zurich, Vienna, Osaka, Kassel, Mannheim, Karlsruhe, Oviedo, the Naples, Wexford, Copenhagen, London, Prague and Brno.
He conducted premiere performances of works by several Czech and Slovak composers (e.g. Petr Eben and Juraj Filas). His recording of the opera "Memento mori" by Juraj Filas with the FOK Symphony Orchestra in Prague became a prize holder at the important television-festival in Slazburg.


2004 - 2007 he was the Chief Conductor of the Slovak Sinfonietta Žilina. Before that date he (as a guest conductor) made with this orchestra one tour in Sweden (in 1990) and a CD recording "Musical Classicism in Bratislava" (in 1996). As a chief conductor he conducted with Slovak Sinfonietta Žilina many concerts in Žilina and others Slovak town, concerts on Bratislava Music Festival, tournée in France, Czech Republic and Germany etc.
Mr. Oliver von Dohnanyi was again the Chief Conductor of the Slovak Sinfonietta Žilina in the years 2011 – 2015.
