Carmina Burana is a suite of medieval musical texts sung by wandering musicians. The first part is about spring and the sounds of nature: the second about love; and the third about the love of wine. These are “book-ended” by similar choruses in praise of “Fortune” which listeners will recognize from their frequent use in television and movie sound-tracks. More than two hundred texts from the 11th to the13th century were discovered in the Alpine monastery of Beurum (Buranum) - hence the name of this major work. The often lascivious sometimes very funny lyrics contributed to the immediate huge success of Carl Orff at the premiere of Carmina Burana in 1937.
